Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and Autism often encounter barriers that limit their independence. Catholic Charities is dedicated to removing barriers and opening the doors to opportunities. With specialized programs, Catholic Charities helps individuals with IDD and Autism develop skills, gain confidence, and contribute meaningfully to their communities throughout. Our programs are designed to address medical complexities and behavioral support needs. All services provide a person-centered approach that recognizes the strengths of everyone and are designed to provide individualized programs and medical care plans to maximize potential and achieve personal life goals.

Our Respite program offers caregivers of individuals with intellectual disabilities short-term relief, ranging from one day to extended stays. Through our Life Sharing Through Family Living model, caregivers can rest knowing their loved ones are receiving compassionate care in a supportive environment, giving them a well-earned break.

St. Edmond’s Home for Children

Inspired by love and a deep respect for the dignity and quality of life of every child, the skilled and compassionate staff at St. Edmond’s Home for Children deliver exceptional, holistic and outcome driven care. We serve children from infancy through school age who are living with intellectual and physical disabilities, offering a comprehensive range of residential, medical, nursing, and therapeutic services. Each child receives an individualized program plan designed to help them achieve their fullest intellectual, physical, and social potential. In collaboration with families and external agencies, we support early intervention and promote successful participation in school and community life across all care settings.

Community Living Arrangements provides personalized support to 35 adults across twelve community homes in Delaware County. Services are customized to meet the unique needs of each resident, with care plans developed by interdisciplinary teams. These teams are focused on promoting independence, fostering personal growth, and ensuring that each resident can live as fully and independently as possible within a supportive and caring environment.

Life Sharing Through Family Living

Life Sharing Through Family Living is Catholic Charities’ most flexible residential program, where adults with intellectual disabilities and children with medically complexities live in a family setting that provides long-term care. Supported by interdisciplinary teams, provider families assist these individuals with their overall needs, assisting them in accessing community resources and participating in recreational, social, volunteer, work, school and worship activities.

The Communities of Don Guanella and Divine Providence

Don Guanella Homes

Don Guanella Homes provides personalized care and attention to sixty men with IDD in ten community-based group homes in Delaware and Philadelphia Counties. Four to eight persons reside in each house and receive comprehensive medical care, physical, speech, behavioral, and life skills therapies, spiritual enrichment, and end-of-life care, including hospice. All services are tailored to meet each resident’s unique needs and are designed by interdisciplinary teams dedicated to promoting independence for all residents. Programming emphasizes social, vocational, and religious opportunities in the community. Residents can participate in day programs offered by The Communities of Don Guanella and Divine Providence and other community providers.

Don Guanella Village

Don Guanella Village is a comprehensive residential setting for adult men with IDD. The campus comprises three 10-bed ranch homes and a large outdoor space with a garden and gazebo. The program serves medically fragile men and provides 24/7 on-site nursing and a multidisciplinary approach that includes consultation with PT, OT, and speech services. Intensive staffing supports social and emotional needs with specialized attention to cognitive changes related to aging and holistic therapies through art and music. Interdisciplinary, personcentered programming includes a variety of experiences like social, vocational, and religious activities in the community.

Divine Providence Village (DPV)

Inspired by compassion and love DPV is a comprehensive residential program for seventy-two adult women with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The 22-acre campus boasts six cottages, an outdoor pool, picnic pavilion, gazebo, greenhouse, exercise room, music room, on-site doctor’s office, and an inclusive, welcoming chapel. Each resident’s plan is tailored to promote independence, choice, community integration, spiritual enrichment, and personalized preferences. DPV offers extensive social and emotional support, 24/7 on-site nursing, and a multidisciplinary approach that includes consultation with PT, OT, and speech services. DPV provides specialized attention to cognitive changes related to aging and holistic therapies through art and music, supports individuals’ complex medical needs, and provides skilled rehabilitative services and end-of-life care.

The Community Living Arrangements (CLA) serve thirty-five adults with IDD in twelve Consolidated Waiver-funded community homes in Delaware County, with three individuals typically in each home. An individualized, person-centered support plan guides programming, maximizing diverse opportunities for community experiences, including recreational, social, volunteer, work, and worship activities. Residents participate in day programs offered by The Communities of Don Guanella and Divine Providence and other community providers.

Special Trips

The Special Trips Program offers exciting activities, vacations, and unique experiences for individuals with IDD. Each month, participants can choose from a wide range of outings, including spa days, creative workshops (art, pottery, and cooking), museum visits, theater shows, and sporting events. Offerings are tailored to individual interests and preferences, ensuring every event is meaningful. The typical ratio is one staff for four participants. Individuals receive personalized support in a safe environment while enjoying these enriching adventures.

Employment Services

An Employment Specialist provides job-readiness and career interest assessments, volunteer and job placement support and guidance while learning new skills. This person-centered approach allows each individual to have an active part in obtaining a volunteer or competitive employment position within his/her community.

The Communities of Don Guanella and Divine Providence Village Day Program is a contracted provider for the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR). Supported employment services includes: Community Based Work Assessments (CBWA), job development, job coaching and extended services to OVR and waiver funded consumers 21 years of age and over with intellectual disabilities, individuals ages 18-21 who have graduated from a special education program or those who may have challenges with employment due to other disabilities outside of IDD .

Supported employment ensures that employers are:
Consulted about accommodations, incentives and disability job awareness.
Matched with qualified, dependable, enthusiastic employees eager to work.
Provided assistance with job coaching.
Contacted regularly for employee job performance updates.

Community Participation Support

CPS provides individuals with an intellectual disability various supports to engage in lifelong learning by trying new things, building their skills, developing networking supports, and being an active member of the communities in which they live.

Our CPS program coordinates activities in the community on an individual basis that allows them to strengthen their independence using their personal goals and outcomes as a guide.

Some activities include:
Participation in community yoga classes
Community hiking
Visiting the local farmers market
Volunteer opportunities
Visiting the local library
Attending pottery classes
Visits to the zoo
And many more!

Community Participation offers individuals with intellectual disabilities opportunities to integrate into the community and develop community connections. One-to-one staffing assists in the exploration of the community by engaging in educational and fun activities. Individuals in the Community Participation program receive assistance building peer relationships, navigating the community, accessing resources, and developing needed life skills.

This CPS functions 100% in the community. Individuals are picked and dropped off at their homes. These outings offer individuals with intellectual disabilities opportunities to integrate into the community and develop a community connection. One-to-one staffing assists in the exploration of the community by engaging in educational and fun activities. Individuals in this CPS Community Participation program receive assistance building peer relationships, navigating the community, accessing resources, and developing needed life skills. All outings are developed by using the individuals input and interests and are also guided by their personal goals and outcomes.

Our Lady of Fatima Day Program

Day Programs at Our Lady of Fatima Parish provide personal growth and enrichment opportunities. Offerings, including an Adult Training Facility, an Aging Program, Community Participation Support, Community Employment, cater to each individual’s diverse needs and interests. Programming includes life skills training, sensory stimulation, socialization, and communication, recreational and leisure activities, prevocational training, volunteer activities, job coaching, job placement, and supported employment. Day Program services maximize potential and provide a nurturing setting to interact with peers, improve life skills, and connect with the community and job opportunities.
